WISH/AS IF/AS THOUGH/WOULD RATHER digunakan dalam kalimat subjunctive. Klausa yang berawalan WISH/AS IF/AS THOUGH/WOULD RATHER digunakan untuk menjelaskan peristiwa yang tidak sesuai kenyataan.

Jika tidak sesuai dengan kenyataan sekarang maka WISH/AS IF/AS THOUGH/WOULD RATHER diikuti simple past.

e.g. He looks as if he won the lottery. (kenyataan dia (mungkin)
tidak menang lotere).

Jika tidak sesuai dengan kenyataan dulu, maka WISH/AS IF/AS THOUGH/WOULD RATHER diikuti dengan past perfect.

e.g. He looks as if he had won the lottery.
