Kartini Beach is one of famous beaches in Jepara. It is located in Bulu village, about 2 kilometers from the center of Jepara Regency. The name of Kartini Beach is taken from the name of a national hero who struggled for woman emancipation, R. A. Kartini. In her childhood, she used to spending her time with her family in this beach playing and joking together. The name is to show people’s respect and also to memorize her.
Kartini Beach is a beautiful white-sand beach and is surrounded by wave breaker along it. In about 3.5 hectares in large, there are many facilities, such as port, turtle aquarium, motel, gazebos, children playground, and so on. Beside that, the beautiful view and the cool atmosphere make it appropriate as a place to relax with family.
This beach is located in a strategic area because the way to go there is easy to get. It is also functioned as a sea transportation port toward Karimunjawa and Panjang Island. Karimunjawa is famous with the beauty of the national park, while Panjang Island is only an ordinary island which is still fresh, just like the forest that usually used as camping ground and crowded by visitor especially when “Lomban” is held.
The people in Jepara usually call this beach as “Pemandian” which means a place to take a bath. The place is on the most western park of Kartini Beach. It is suitable to take a bath because the water is very clean and clear. Furthermore, it is believed that the water can cure skin disease. Usually people take a bath here at dawn or dusk while enjoying beautiful sunset.
Another interesting thing in this beach is the turtle aquarium. It is a unique building in the shape of a very big turtle. The ornament in the body has beautifully made in such way just like the real turtle. Inside the building, there are many aquariums and also game center. We can play the game by inserting a special coin into the machine.
Kartini Beach can’t be separated from traditional event called “Lomban”. It is an annually event on 8 Syawal, a week after Lebaran Day. It is an all day long celebration usually entertained by live traditional dance and music. The people in Jepara usually cook rice cake boiled in rhombus-shaped packet of young coconut trees to celebrate it. That’s why this celebration is also called “Kupatan”. When this celebration is held, Kartini beach will be very crowded of visitor not only from Jepara but also from the other regency.
