Nahdlatul Ulama (literally translated to Revival of the Ulama, abbreviated as NU) is a traditionalist Ash'ari movement in Indonesia following the Shafi'i school of jurisprudence.[1] NU was established on January 31, 1926 in Surabaya as a response to the rise of Sunni Islam in Saudi Arabia and Islamic modernism in Indonesia.
